"Moreover, you scorned our people, and compared the Albanese to sheep, and according to your custom think of us with insults. Nor have you shown yourself to have any knowledge of my race. Our elders were Epirotes, where this Pirro came from, whose force could scarcely support the Romans. This Pirro, who Taranto and many other places of Italy held back with armies. I do not have to speak for the Epiroti. They are very much stronger men than your Tarantini, a species of wet men who are born only to fish. If you want to say that Albania is part of Macedonia I would concede that a lot more of our ancestors were nobles who went as far as India under Alexander the Great and defeated all those peoples with incredible difficulty. From those men come these who you called sheep. But the nature of things is not changed. Why do your men run away in the faces of sheep?"
Letter from Skanderbeg to the Prince of Taranto ▬ Skanderbeg, October 31 1460

Very much later there came the waves of Slavs and drove the Albanians, who were scattered all over the Balkan Peninsula, to the western part of modern European Turkey, where they live now. (The Missionary review of the world: Volume 34, 1911)

Re: Quota per shqiptaret.
Migrations and invasions in Greece and adjacent areas, Nicholas Geoffrey Lemprière Hammond, 1976, p.163: "Illyrian has survived. Geography has played a large part in that survival; for the mountains of Montenegro and northern Albania have supplied the almost impenetrable home base of the Illyrian-speaking peoples. They were probably the first occupants, apart from nomadic hunters, of the Accursed Mountains and their fellow peaks, and they maintained their independence when migrants such as the Slavs occupied the more fertile lowlands and the highland basins. Their language may lack the cultural qualities of Greek, but it has equalled it in its power to survive and it too is adapting itself under the name of Albanian to the conditions of the modern world."

Re: Quota per shqiptaret.
The first mention of Albanians in documents is from 1079 A.D. and refers to the territory between Ochrida and Thessalonike, and to Epirus. In present day Albania (in its northern part), they were for the first time described in the 13th century. The analysis of placenames and geographical names suggests that they lived, during the first centuries of Roman conquering on the Balkan peninsula, (also) in the northern part of present day Albania; according to Georg Stadtmüller, the center of the ancient Albanians was the area of the river Mati. There are a number of ancient Albanian geographical names in Albania, for example the river Bunë (cf. Albanian buenë, bujenë "inundation"), or Sar Planina, from Greek suggests that they lived in contact with Greeks. A large number of placenames in Macedonia and parts of Serbia show typically Albanian features: Stip, from Greek It is significant that, in contrast to Rumanian, there are Latin loanwords in Albanian which show a very ancient sound pattern, from the 1st century B.C.: Lat. cingula >Albanian qingëlë; vetus, veteris > vjetër etc. The Romance languages have inherited these words from Vulgar Latin, thus N. Rumanian chinga 'belly band, saddle girth', from *cingla; batrân 'old' from veteran, etc. - Cf. I. Popovic, Geschichte der Serbokroatischen Sprache, 1960, pp. 79-85; G. Stadtmüller, Forschungen zur albanischen Frühgeschichte, 1966; A. Rosetti, Istoria limbii române, 1986, pp. 195-197.

Following the collapse of the Roman Empire and the weakening of the Byzantine Empire, the Illyrian-speaking peoples expanded once again into the Mat valley and Muzeqe plain. By then they were known to thier southern neighbors as Albani, and thier language as Albanian."

The original home of the Dorians before they appeared in Thcssaly and Doris is by many thought to have been Illyria. The ancients thus associated Hellenic origins with Illyria. The Illyric type par excellence to-day is the Albanian. That the Albanians of Upper Albania have been in their present habitat since before the memory of man...

Re: Quota per shqiptaret.
The population of Thessaly has been estimated at 300,000 ; that of Epirus at 400,000; which, added to that of Greece Proper, would form an aggregate of 1,250,000. Of the population of Greece and Macedonia, taking one province with another, the Greeks were formerly supposed to form about a third, two-thirds being Albanians and Turks. In some parts of the Morea, especially Messenia and Elis, the Moslem, prior to the revolution, outnumbered the Christians; in Thessaly and Epirus, they slightly preponderated; in Attica and Boeotia, the Christians were supposed to be 10 in 11; and in Crete, out of 280,000, 130,000 were Greeks.

Re: Quota per shqiptaret.
CORFU. (The ancient Corcyra.) The first in rank, and the second in size, of the Ionian Islands, situated very near the coast of Albania, at the entrance of the Adriatic. The channel by which it is separated from the main land, is very narrow at its northern extremity, bat widens into a magnificent basin ; the eastern coast of the island, as well as the opposite coast of Albania, being deeply imbayed ; while ike southern extremity of Corfu again approximates to the main. The island is of very irregular figure, about 15 miles in length and 8 miles across at its widest part. The interior is mountainous. The loftiest range runs from E. to W. across the northern part, forming a contiauation of the great Acroceraunian chain. A somewhat lower range, branching off nearly at a right angle, traverses the length of the island, terminating southward in the lofty mass of Mount Deca. The western coast is very bold ; and from the mountains which form it, the eeneral surface of the island slopes down gradually to the sea-snore on the eastern coast, giving an eastern aspect to the greater portion of the island, and displaying nearly the whole to a voyager passing op the Strait. The town of Corfu, the capital of the Ionian Republic, and the see of an archbishop, is situated on the eastern shore, at the foot of a promontory terminating in a remarkable double rock, upon wkicii the citadel is built. The town is walled, and has been strongly fortified, so as to be capable of being rendered nearly impregnable. Internally, it is ill built, and, in proportion to its size, one of the mranest in construction in the Mediterranean, as well as miserably dirty : it contains about 17,000 inhabitants. Lord Guilford has established a uni\erstty here under the auspices of the British Government. The total population of the island is supposed to be about 60,000,—the same as that of Cephalonia.

Re: Quota per shqiptaret.
The Albanians are by some supposed to be the descendants of the ancient Pelasgi, and of a far purer race than are the modern Greeks. From the uniformly classic features of the people I should be inclined to adopt this view.

Re: Quota per shqiptaret.
The Albanians are perhaps the oldest race in southeastern Europe and the people of today are quite possibly descendants of the so-called Pelasgi, the early inhabitants of Greece and neighboring countries.

Re: Quota per shqiptaret.
The ancestors of the Albanians were the ancient Illyrians, who dwelled along the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, from Epirus as far north as Panno- nia. The Greek geographer of the second century ad, Ptolemy, mentioned an Albanian tribe with a city Albanopolis. The name of these Albanians was in the eleventh century extended to the rest of ancient Illyrians. This people was called in Greek, Albanoi, Arbanoi, or Albanitai, Arbanitai; in Latin, Arbanenses or Albanenses; from the Latin or Roman from comes the Slavonic Arbanasi, in modern Greek Arvanitis, in Turkish Arnaut. And now of those great Thracian families, once so famous and powerful, and so widely spread over the Thraco-Illyrian penninsula and Asia Minor, all that survives is a few incosnderable remnants of Albanians and Arnauts in Epirus and Macedonia. ~The Gentile and the Jew in the Courts of the Temple of Christ: An ...
